Digital, Analog, HDTV = Mass Confusion

If you’re confused about all the recent changes in TV-land, don’t feel bad. We continue to get plenty of calls and e-mails from people who have questions.

We’re here to help, so here are a few things I tell folks:

- HDTV and digital TV are two different things (sort of). Just because your TV is digital does not mean it’s HD.

- To watch TV in High Definition, you must have an HD set AND an HD signal.

- How do you get an HD signal? Three basic ways:

#1 From us. You can pull our HD signal off the airwaves with an antenna.

#2 From your cable provider. You must call and order it.

#3 From your satellite provider. You must call and order it.

- Now… About the switch from analog to digital: Do you have cable or satellite? If the answer is yes, you’re done. That’s it. Forget about it. Go read Newy’s blog. No matter what kind of TV you have, it will still work after we switch off our analog signal next February.

- If you have an old TV that’s hooked up to rabbit ears, you need a special box that will convert the digital over-the-air signal back to analog. You can buy the converter boxes at lots of places, and Uncle Sam will give you a coupon to cut the cost.

- If you buy a new digital TV (especially one with a built-in tuner) you will be able to watch TV just fine without cable or satellite. Hopefully you won’t mind the fact that the picture will be crystal clear.

I know this doesn’t answer all of your questions, so check out the special section on our website. This is where you can also find out how to get a coupon for a converter box:

Have a great weekend. See you back at the Factory on Monday.
