Squirrel War Update

First of all, thanks to Don for the advice.  Sounds like a plan.  However, I’m happy to report that I might not need it.

My collie/golden retriever with bad hips snagged one of the buggers today.  I think it ran into her mouth.

I was headed out the door to work and she came wiggling out of the bedroom with what appeared to be her squirrel toy in her mouth.  (Part of a collection that includes a chipmunk, a rabbit and a deer.)  The only thing that made me look twice was the amazingly realistic tail.

Ahhhhhhhhh!

My first thought was to shout, “Drop it!”  But she was so proud.  Instead I managed, “Good dog!”

I called her out to back porch, praising her every step of the way — but really not wanting to handle a dead spit-covered rodent while wearing a suit.

She dropped her prize reluctantly, and I used the pooper scooper to put the body in the trash.

By now the other two dogs were on the scene, so we had an impromptu celebration of the pack’s triumph.  Dog treats all around!

One down, no telling how many more to go.  I just hope I’m home the next time someone scores.   Otherwise, there’s no telling where I’ll find the carcass…

  • Great story!! When my pups go hunting and find things I automatcally yell the words “Drop It” – and they know those words all too well. I get such great pleasure having these pups around. They are great company and great little companions and rarely talk back!!! Just love that you have been on the 10pm Newscast lately. Don’t over work yourself!!
