I got back into town last night from a couple of days off, and the first message I got from the station was that actor Heath Ledger had been found dead. What a shocker. It is one of those stories that reaches out and grabs you because it is so unexpected and untimely.
Viewers sometimes ask if we in the news business become desensitized to events like Ledger’s death. In this case, the answer is no. We have the same reaction as most people. In fact, I think there’s something about being among the first to know that magnifies its impact.
I heard a lot of speculation this morning about what may have caused his death. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear something concrete. In the meantime, we’re all left to wonder what might have been for someone so young and so talented.
